Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream!---
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.
Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.
Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today.
Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.
In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!
Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act, ---act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'erhead!
Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;
Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.
Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

인생찬가
나에게 슬픈 곡조로 인생은 한낱 공허한
꿈이라고 말하지 말라!
잠자는 영혼은 죽은 영혼,
만물은 겉보기와는 다른 것.
삶은 진지한 것! 삶은 엄숙한 것!
결코 무덤이 그의 목표는 아닌 것.
본시 흙으로 된 존재이니, 그대는 다시 흙으로 돌아가야만
된다는 그 말은
우리의 영혼을 두고 한 말은 아니다.
즐거움도 슬픔도
숙명처럼 우리의 목적도 방법도 아닌 것
오늘보다 내일 더 멀리 나갈 수 있도록
행동하라!
예술이 길다지만 세월은 덧없이 흐르는 것
오늘 우리의 가슴은 튼튼하고 용감하지만,
우리가 지금 이 순간도 죽음을 향하여,
소리없이 행진을 하고 있다는 사실만은 아무도 부인하지 못하리.
인생의 광대한 싸움터에서,
인생의 야영장에서,
말없이 쫓기는 가축의 무리는 되지 말자!
이 투쟁에 앞장 서는 영웅이 되자!
미래는 믿지 말자, 그것이 제아무리 달콤하다 하더라도!
지나간 일은 지나간 일로 돌리자!
활동하자, 살아 있는 이 현재를 위하여 활동하자!
가슴 속엔 용기를 품고, 하늘 위엔 하느님이 계시다는
신념을 가지고!
위대한 우리의 선조들은 우리도 노력하면
우리의 삶이 거룩한 것이 될 수 있다는 모범을 남겨 주었다.
이들은 또, 이 삶을 뒤에 두고 떠나면서
인생의 모래밭 위에 발자국을 남겨 주었다.
수많은 우리의 형제들이
이 험난한 인생의 항로를 달리다가,
풍랑을 만나 구조는 끊어지고 절망 속에 허덕일 때,
이들이 남긴 발자국은 절망에서 우리를 구해주는
등불이 되리!
자, 우리 모두 일어나 활동하자.
우리 앞에 어떤 운명이 우리를 기다리고 있다 하더라도.
이루고 또 추구하면서,
일하는 것을 배우고 기다리는 것도 배우자.
